Embark on this trail to travel back in time to the Triassic period, with a vista of the colored rocks of the Zion Canyon.

Angels Landing is among the most popular hiking paths in Zion National Park. It features spectacular views of colorful layers of rock dating back hundreds of millions of years. Prepare yourself for the challenging twists, bends and gradual uphill trajectory of this tough and scenic trail.

Sit at one of the picnic tables at the Grotto Trailhead and enjoy snacks and refreshments before you start. Drinking water and restrooms are also available here. Listen to the rush of water from the Virgin River, which meanders around the hiking trail.

The first section of the path incorporates the West Rim Trail, which is fairly level and straightforward. Gradually ascend toward the Refrigerator Canyon part that offers excellent views of otherworldly rock formations. The next area is Walter’s Wiggles, comprising a set of switchbacks that allow you to rise up the canyon quickly. Catch your breath at the Scout Lookout and marvel at the views of the valley.

The astounding vistas continue as you reach the final stretch of the path. Those with a fear of heights should be wary. Hold onto the chains that flank the red rocks to provide safe and secure hand rails for your journey.

The trail is a 5-mile (8-kilometer) round-trip and should take about 4 or 5 hours to complete. Note that it is fairly strenuous, with sudden turns and steep ascents, rising a total of 1,488 feet (454 meters). Attempt the hike in the morning to avoid the scorching afternoon sun in summer. In winter, the paths are frequently icy and hazardous.

The Angels Landing trail is a little east of the center of Zion National Park in southwestern Utah, just north of the Arizona border. It begins beside the picnic area of the Grotto Trailhead of Zion Canyon. Consider seeing some of the other landmarks in the region, such as the Touchstone Wall, the Hidden Canyon and the Great White Throne.

Up Up Up you go. Very strenuous for two and half miles. If your feeling lucky go the additional 1/2 mile hanging on to the chain on the edge of a 1400 foot fall. Only 10 people died falling in the past 10 years.

My first trip was in 1962. Needless to say, the attendance has increased exponentially. If you do Angels Landing, do it as early in the day as possible. The cable climb to the top can get unsettling with the usual big crowd.

The last 1/2 mile is the hike to the actual tip of Angel's Landing. SUPER CROWDED!!! Too many school kids - wearing crocs, sneakers, sandals - drove me crazy, as it is super dangerous. I HAVE NO IDEA WHY THE PARKS DEPT ALLOWS SO MANY PEOPLE TO CONGREGATE ON THIS LAST 1/2 MILE! Literally and without exaggeration - 2-3 people trying to share less than 10 inches of trail..........unbelievable. Yes, there are chains. Yes, you can go slow.........but one mistake, by you or someone else, and someone dies.
